What I'm getting at is the pure hatred of these people. It obviously extends far beyond Sean Penn. Sean Penn is anti-war, but did you read his letter to the President. It wasn't obscene, it wasn't hateful, it wasn't calling for Bush's head. The people who are against Penn are too caught up in their hatred for anyone who opposes their view that they can't see that what Sean Penn does shouldn't affect them in the least. The war ain't gonna stop because Sean Penn says it should. So why do you all react with such hatred?

To say Sean is of no talent, is absurd. Ask a few young actors out there who they are most in awe of. I've personally heard Brad Pitt, Benecio Del Toro, Barry Pepper say how great he is in interviews. He is admired by Brando, Deniro, Nicholson, Beatty, and Duvall. He is a three time Academy Award nominee. Second, he doesn't ask you to listen to him, he doesn't ask you to agree with him. He is simply learning more about this situation so he can make informed decisions. I had to laugh when you said to let our very capable Commander in Chief handle this. Who did you have in mind? Certainly not Bush? I choke on that thought. Or was it a pretzel?
Lastly, you have no influence over studios or filmmakers. Sean will always get work because he has more brains, balls, talent, and integrity than you'll ever experience first hand. So many un-enlightened people tonight...my first visit here. I have known Sean's family since I was a born and I can tell you that Sean Penn, just like his dear parents, is not just an actor, he is a father and a human with a conscience. I have sat around the living room talking politics with this family ever since I had ears...you critics do not know who he is. As a responsible parent, artist, and human being, he has taken his US citizenship seriously. You should too. Get involved like he has-don't be jealous of him, just join in the educational experience of growth. I believe the responsibility of the artist is to share with others, the pain the world is in, and then perhapys that "art" can up-lift-make aware, help to change- bring attention to the suffering and mostly the TRUTH. How can you critics judge a person whom you do not know, and how can non-activists judge someone who is trying to do something positive- learning, justifying, sharing...come on folks, if you are going to criticize someone, you'd better be informed...do some research before you waste your time and everyone else's time with your empty words. We can debate and dialog or we can stagnate and constipate...but I do think you need to grow up. Sean, I have read your published comments concerning your trip to Iraq. I would normally say that your quest for "understanding" is quite laudible. However, the act of visiting a country with which America is on the brink of war is not a very wise move. As usual, you are displaying your complete lack of impulse control. History should at least lend a lesson to you, with the images of Jane Fonda on an anti-aircraft weapon used against our young pilots.
Now if you say to America that you must personally investigate the situation because of the "American and Iraqi blood that would be on your hands", then join the armed forces and investigate it first-hand. Or try to use your influence to talk to our intelligence officials. Otherwise, regardless of your opinion, you will ultimately have to depend on our very capable Commander-in-Chief and his staff to handle the situation as they deem necessary.
Before this unwise move, your talents would have been much better utilized in entertaining the American troops stationed overseas and lifting their spirits. Even if you do not agree with American foreign policy, you could have been there for the solders whose blood might "be on your hands".
But I wouldn't suggest you try and set foot near those noble men and women serving our country now, because you might not come out of it unscathed.
Just remember, you are simply an actor, with no extraordinary talent, and your opinion, which you certainly are welcome to, is absolutely useless to "normal Americans".
Be warned that I have a voice, too. I call upon all that read this to join me in using my voice and economic pressure to influence producers and film studios. May your dubious acting skills never grace the big screen, or even the TV set. And if they do, not one penny of mine will aid you.

Sean Penn, of course, cares about money to a certain extent. But what does requesting a private jet have to do with him making more money? If you knew the whole story on that deal you wouldn't have brought it up. Sean Penn acted in the film "The Thin Red Line" for a tiny fraction of his usual fee, which he does all the time. For the premiere, he requested to use Rupert Murdoch's private plane, and was turned down. It didn't bother him so much that he couldn't use the plane. What pissed him off was that Murdoch made his fortune with the tabloids that make up stories, and exploit people like Sean Penn. And now the multi billionaire, who got Penn for a major discount in his film, wouldn't allow the use of one of his planes for the weekend. It was a point he was trying to make to Murdoch. You really shouldn't spout off when you know so little on a topic. If Penn wanted money so badly, why work for Woody Allen, Nick Cassavetes, and Tim Robbins? If he was so hard up for money why would he throw his own money into the films he directs? The Nicolas Cage thing isn't really a private joke you moron. It was in the newspapers. And Penn was right. Nicolas Cage did sell out. He went from making smart, quirky, character driven pieces to making shit like Con Air. Only now is Cage getting back to the good stuff with Adaptation. Penn was far from being the only actor that criticized Cage's movies. Penn has been offered parts in Jerry Bruckheimer productions but he turned them down. One more piece of evidence that Penn doesn't care about the money. If he did, why would he deliberately sabotage his own career by so publicly engaging in controversial acts? Why not stay married to a superstar like Madonna, if just for the money and the lifestyle? Why constantly degrade Hollywood movies in interviews?

I'm just curious as to why people assume that an actor can have little knowledge of the world. True, many of them are coddled in their mansions and rarely venture out into the real world. I do not make a habit of writing to people I don't know, but in this case, I was very moved by your story and wanted to tell you that you planted a very big seed in my head and heart. It really suprises, and frightens me to see how strongly (and may I say, impolite and inaccurate) some people have been in response to Mr. Penn's trip to Iraq. But, then again, this is America. And, we have the right to say what we feel. A lot of people will respond in anger when they are fearful. Do people out there actually believe that everything that you see on CNN, or your local news is the 100% God's honest truth. Isn't it at least possible, that since most of us do not work in the Pentagon or the White House, that we may not always be getting the whole picture? Why is that so hard for some people to swallow? Because they have a Jackass for a leader? Is that their fault? Can they do anything about that? The people who have expressed that Mr. Penn go back to Beverly Hills (by the way, he lives in San Francisco) to his mansion should take a look in the mirror. Where do you live? Has you husband been pulled out of your bed in the middle of the night and just killed for no reason? Do your children eat three meals a day and wear shoes? Man, there are a lot of stupid people in this country. First of all, to say that Sean Penn is acting this way so he can stay in the Hollywood mainstream is ridiculous. Actors have as much a right to utilize their freedom of speech as anyone else. Another thing, of course he realized what happened on September 11th. We all do. But some of us believe there are other ways of going about things than murdering innocent people. Somewhere in these countries are little kids, and mothers, and grandparents who don't necessarily agree with what their leaders are doing. Why should they die? How would you feel if innocent people died in this country? Well, it happened didn't it. On September 11th. And you didn't like it. Granted it was an unexpected, undeserved attack, but if they had just killed a few Americans who they felt were especially deserving there wouldn't have been as large an outcry. But they killed women and children. That's what people like Sean Penn are saying. There are innocent people who will die in these bombings.
One more thing, and it would be great if someone would actually address this question for once, because the cowardly Bush supporters don't have an answer for it. What good does it do to fight for this country, and for our freedoms, if we don't respect and love the freedoms we have. Sean Penn speaks his mind and everybody is calling for him to leave the country. If that's the kind of place this is turning into maybe it's not worth saving.

Did I read that correctly? Did someone actually say that Sean Penn should go along with what the US does, whether he agrees with it or not? BS. That's not what this country is about. This country is about having the freedom to share a belief that is different from the popular (read: government) view. Sean Penn did not disparage, or devalue those who have died in combat. With all that is going on, the Bush administration has made zero effort to get people to use less oil. They have told us to keep our economy strong by shopping and spending money. But nothing about how if we stop using so much oil, we will not be jonesing for it from our enemies. Sean Penn is a courageous, well-informed, American. Nowhere in the constitution does it say that if you are an actor you don't have the right to express your opinion. And by the way, Reilly is a fraud, a bully, and an opportunist. Project - Stop Government Policy Control via Corporate Greed. Government corruption is stopping citizens / small business people / inmates / freedom to participate in policy making and financial opportunity that would make them otherwise able to survive comfortably and involve themselves in politics. They are doing this in part by giving the majority of government work/dollars to their buddies in oil and in war machine development (Lockheed Martin, et al) and not allowing the rest of us to provide work and gain income from the government budgets by performing services that are needed by our government (thus being aware and more involved in the choices that are made by our government). CitySites is fighting back with tools for communication to enforce policy that will give all of us the power to be involved in government policy, production and revenue sharing:
1. voter registration, online, secure, digitally signatured, countable, certifiable voting.
2. protest and reporting of corruption in distribution of work by government agencies
3. elimination of 2 party system with multi-candidate information online, polling for popularity prior to elections, voter opinions polling on issues, and record keeping of promises v. voting in office.
4. status tracking of corporations receiving government contracts and demanding 'break-up' of big business contracts that can only be provided by multi-billion dollar organizations. (lockheed currently holds 2.1 billion in NASA / fed. contracts)
5. Enables us to breakdown and pass the work ($$) of large government contracts (rotation) around throughout communities, individuals, consulotants and small business owners in a fair manner. This includes the work of building our voter databases (to ensure that no single entity is able to corrupt the validity of the vote count) and our other projects that involve work that can be performed by any number of trained entities (we can train new people to qualify to perform the work). Much of this work of government contracts does not involved rocket science or engineering degrees.
As a small woman-owned technology services provider, (together with a group of consultants), I have been applying for and examining government contract opportunities in the IT and Multimedia fields. I have found that the requirements often preclude contractors, other than incumbents from providing the necessary data and are usually prohibitive to any small business entity due to the vast scope of work that is not broken down into reasonable elements for production.
The freedom of information act is dwindling away to non-existance, as I was refused documentation related to projects and ignored when requesting data on dollar amounts of DOD budget awarded to huge corporations (which was just increased by 50 billion).
We need support and funding to get these online services for communication, voter registration and candidate information finished, so that the world will know that we do not support George Bush's war for dollars (at least most of us do not), and so that our government will change and the power will come back to the people.
Please help to support these important projects. These are not-for-profit concepts.
